Create Your Own Pi Artwork

Turn a date or favourite number into geometric art. Choose your colours, explore the shading and download your design.

Enter a whole number, or a date in DDMMYY format: 03/12/19 becomes 031219. Your number chooses the starting position, rather than searching for its occurrence.
Your number selects a starting position in the first 350,000 decimal digits of π. Each digit guides a shape in our own geometric pattern.

Adjust the contrast between lighter and darker shapes.

Preparing the artwork…

Geometric artwork created with MathsTeachersOnly’s own drawing algorithm. Download a 3,000 × 3,000 pixel PNG. Your numbers stay in your browser.

How your number creates the artwork

The decimal digits begin 1, 4, 1, 5…; the initial 3 is not counted. Your whole number chooses a starting position in the first 350,000 decimal digits of π. The next 4,096 digits guide subdivision, shapes, rotations, colours and shading. The same position and settings reproduce the same design.

Choose a position from 1 to 345,905. For a date, use DDMMYY with a two-digit year, for example 03/12/19. Dates are treated as numbers; this activity does not search for the date within π. Use the separate Pi Day activity to find number sequences.

Colour 4 also controls the bottom-right triangle. Square and circle designs use the same underlying pattern. Your input stays in your browser; the optional caption is included in the downloaded image only when selected.

The inspiration

The geometric π artwork on MathsTeachersOnly was created by Angela using Google’s original Pi Celebration tool and a number based on her birthdate. It inspired this independent MathsTeachersOnly generator, which uses its own drawing rules.
